2-KANONI &  MON REPO Palace (optional Achileon Palace)

Your Wheelchair Accessible Kanoni and Mon Repo Palace tour starts from your hotel, where you meet your English-speaking licensed guide. You find her by the sign she is holding with your name on it. The ride from the port to Kanoni goes through Corfu Town, which will take about 20 minutes.

Your drive to Kanoni follows a winding seaside road, passing traditional villages on the west coast of Corfu. From Kanoni, you admire the famous view of Mouse Island (‘Pontikonisi’). According to the legend, Mouse Island was formed by the ship that took Odysseus back to Ithaca, which is his home port. That is where Poseidon, the God of the sea, turned him into stone. He was angry at being defied by the Phaeacians. Under the Hill of Kanoni is the Convent of Vlachernas.

Optional: Mouse Island can only be accessed by small boats for environmental reasons. You have the possibility to take the boat to the Mouse Island, however these boats are not accessible.

Kanoni

Kanoni is a bathing place, located in Central Corfu at 5 kilometers from Corfu town. It is one of the most beautiful areas of Corfu town and is situated on the outskirts of the modern city. Right on the southern peninsula, where the archaeological area of Palaiopoli is situated. Kanoni, which means “battery,” is named after a battery gun that was installed by the French in 1798. On the square, you find a remaining cannon as a reminder of the past.

Mouse Island

From the square you have a beautiful view over Pontikonissi (“mouse island”), which can be reached by means of a boat from Vlacherna. The small Vlacherna chapel, with a tiled roof, is connected to the land by a narrow strip of cement. A little further you find the green, characteristic island of Pontikonissi. Just below Kanoni is the lagoon of Halikiopoulos.

Tip: the Egret is a very endangered species. The bird often hibernates in the Halikiopoulos laguna. Who knows, you might discover him!

Pure magic

What makes Kanoni so unique, is that it is located above the runway of Corfu’s national airport. This way, you have the opportunity to spot planes that pass so close that almost feel as if you can touch them! The sunset is genuinely fantastic. If you are lucky enough to see the sunset at the same time that the moon rises, you experience pure magic that lets you enjoy Corfu in all its glory! The perfect way of ending your Kanoni tour

Mon Repo Palace

Next up is a visit to Mon Repo Palace, which is close to Kanoni. It can be found in Mon Repo Estate, a beautiful property where the Greek Kings used to spend their holidays, and the place where Prince Philip of Edinburgh (Queen Elizabeth’s husband) was born. There, lush nature has created a beautiful forest. This is wheelchair accessible until the Palace and back.

The Palace itself hosts a small but fascinating museum, in which the first floor has a collection of ancient Corfiot traditional costumes and furniture and an archaeological museum. The entrance is by means of a ramp in the entrance, and there is a lift to access the floors. Accessible toilet situated onsite.

Corfu Old Town

At the end of the tour, you return to the port with a panoramic drive without stopping through the Old Town of Corfu. You will pass the main square, the Old Fortress, the Palace of Saint Michael and Saint George, and the New Fortress. Some great photo stops before your driver and guide drop you off at your hotel.

3-PALEOKASTRITSA (can combine with North East 4 hours +)

Paleokastritsa, located on the northwest coast of Corfu, is considered to be one of the most beautiful villages of Corfu. It consists of six different small shores and rocky beaches with crystal blue seawater. The sloping saltwater in Paleokastritsa and the open sea ensure a very pleasant cooling from the hot sun. It is advisable to come early since the narrow (pebble) beaches fill up quickly in the summer. Paleokastritsa beach is accessible with a ramp, and you will find amphibious chairs.

Beaches

The area is filled with amazing beaches, such as Paradise Beach, also known as Chomos. Or Marmara beach, Liniodoro beach, Rovinia beach, Limni beach, Stelari beach, and Kasteli beach. All of them are beautiful crystal clear bays and beaches with brilliant colors of seawater. Along the way, you can see the lion’s head in a rock, the blue eye, and St. Nicolas and Nausica caves. The beached can be seen from a distance by taking a boat ride, which lasts approximately 2 hours.

The bays are filled with terraces and (fish) restaurants, with the town’s specialty being lobster. A road, full of souvenir shops, runs along the bay to the monastery on a 200 m high rock. The monastery of the Panayia Theotokos was built in 1255 and mostly used in the 18th and 19th centuries.

In the courtyard, you find a wishing well, with a former library that is set up as a souvenir shop. In the middle of that space, you see an enormous 30m long backbone of a whale—a truly awe-inspiring sight. At the right of the courtyard is the church with an extensive collection of late-Byzantine icons.

4 - CORFU OLD TOWN & FORTRESS

Your Corfu Old town and Fortress tour starts with a pick-up from the hotel your private driver guide you first head to the Old Fortress with private adapted vehicle.

Old Fortress

The Old Fortress remains one of the most exciting tourist attractions of Corfu Island. Build initially by the Venetians, and a couple of centuries later the British made some alterations.

The fortress is said to date from the 6th century. Gothic looters landed here to seek protection. In the 15th century, the Venetians rebuilt the walls, they dug the canal (“contrafossa”) and provided a drawbridge. Later the British destroyed the Venetian base, and they built military barracks, a prison, and a hospital. The fort was in use by the Greek army until 1979, after which archaeological restorations began. Once finished, the fort was opened to the public.

Today at the premises, you find a small Byzantine museum, the neoclassical St. George’s Church. This is a garrison church built by the British in 1840. This church was severely damaged in the Second World War, however got restored after and is now an Orthodox church. This church, by the way, looks a lot like a temple. You find a bar-restaurant at the bottom of the fortress, which is also open in the evening when the fort is closed.

Corfu Center

From the fort, you have the most exquisite views of the island and old Corfu Town City. Your tour continues on foot/wheels visiting the Venetian style old Corfu Town center from the Old Fortress. The narrow streets between the houses, the numerous churches around every corner, and the well known Liston, will amaze you and complete your tour in Corfu.

In the old Corfu Town center, you can do some shopping, taste the traditional local foods in one of the several restaurants or have a coffee in one of the Liston’s Cafes. The French built Liston in the same style as those in Rue de Rivoli in Paris. A real lust for the eye.
